OpenMediaVault (OMV) as Home NAS: Ransomware Risk and Hardening
OMV is the free Debian-based NAS OS for spare x86 hardware. What its snapshot story really is, and the hardening steps that matter in 2026.
What it does
Pricing
Good at
- Free NAS OS on a spare SBC or x86 mini-PC
- Debian under the hood (familiar to Linux users)
- SMB/NFS shares with rsnapshot-based snapshots via plugin
Not for
- Users who want ZFS (use TrueNAS SCALE)
- Plug-and-play households
Key features
- Debian-based, free
- SMB/NFS/FTP shares, RAID via mdadm
- Snapshot via rsnapshot or ZFS-on-root plugins
- Web UI on port 80/443
The real risks
Snapshots depend on a plugin. OMV has no built-in snapshot scheduler for data disks — the rsnapshot or ZFS plugins fill the gap. Default installs have no undo layer.
The web UI and SSH. Port 80/443 and SSH are the doors. Exposed to the internet, OMV boxes get brute-forced like any Linux box.
Debian's attack surface. You inherit Debian's service list. Hardening is standard Linux work — fail2ban, ufw, unattended-upgrades.
No vendor security pipeline. You track Debian advisories + OMV forum posts. There is no Synology-style auto-update of the NAS layer.
Ransomware via SMB from an infected PC. Same as every NAS: the share is readable, the malware encrypts it. The undo is the snapshot layer — which you had to install yourself.
Hardening steps
- Install the rsnapshot (or ZFS) plugin and schedule snapshots for every data share — this is the undo layer, it is not there by default.
- Keep the web UI LAN-only; manage remotely over Tailscale/WireGuard.
- ufw + fail2ban from day one; disable password SSH (keys only).
- Unattended-upgrades for Debian security patches.
- Off-box copy: rsync/rclone job to another box or cloud — a snapshot on the same disk is not a backup.
- Least-privilege SMB users; no admin share mapped on Windows boxes.
- Keep the OMV config backup (System → Backup) somewhere off the box.
- Test one snapshot restore per quarter.
Frequently asked questions
Does OMV have snapshots?
Not built-in for data disks. Install the rsnapshot or ZFS-on-root plugin and schedule them — without a plugin, there is no undo layer.
Is OMV free?
Yes, fully free and open source. You supply the hardware.
